⁍ Meng Wanzhou is fighting against extradition to the United States.

⁍ She is accused by U.S. authorities of bank fraud for misleading HSBC.

⁍ Lawyers for the Canadian attorney general have released some of the requested documents.

– Chinese tech exec Meng Wanzhou was arrested at Vancouver International Airport on Dec. 1—the same day she arrived in Canada for a business trip. Now she’s fighting extradition to the US, and her lawyers want documents related to her arrest released, Reuters reports. Lawyers for Canada’s attorney general have argued against the release of the redacted documents, saying national security should not be used to cover up abuse. “Additionally, national security privilege should not be used to protect government enforcement officials from being embarrassed,” Meng’s lawyers wrote in a submission. Lawyers for the Canadian attorney general have released some of the requested documents, but claimed privilege over others, saying a full unredacted release of the documents would compromise national security. A special closed hearing of the case will resume in the federal court on Thursday, during which the Canadian government’s lawyers will produce the redacted documents to be reviewed by Meng’s legal team to assist the court in deciding whether to release the documents in their entirety. (China threatened retaliation after Meng’s arrest.)
