– Spain has reported its highest-ever total of infections from the new coronavirus, which has now infected 566,326 people in western Europe. The latest count brings the death toll in the disease to 142, Reuters reports. Spain declared a state of emergency in March and introduced measures to prevent employers from using the virus as an excuse to dismiss workers. The government is now negotiating an extension of the ban on firing workers until the end of the year, a source with knowledge of the matter tells Reuters. There are about 800,000 workers in Spain who are on furlough, compared to 2.5 million when the government declared a state of emergency in March. Spain reported 4,708 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours on Friday, bringing its cumulative total to 566,326—the highest in western Europe.
