– President Trump held a roundtable discussion with Latino supporters in Phoenix on Monday, a day after holding an indoor rally in Las Vegas that drew the attention of Nevada’s Democratic governor. “This is supposed to be a roundtable, but it looks like a rally,” Trump told the crowd of hundreds, per Reuters. The president was praised by small-business owners and members of local law enforcement at the Phoenix event, while continuing to criticize Democratic protests against racism in US cities, saying they threatened Latino businesses. “They’ll rip down your community,” Trump said. “Many of these are Hispanic-American small businesses, stores, shops, and they rip them down and call it peaceful protesting.” Trump’s lead with Latino voters has shrunk from 30 points in July to 9 points in August, according to the most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll. The former vice president was scheduled to travel to Florida on Tuesday in a bid to shore up flagging support from Hispanic voters in that key battleground state. The most recent national Reuters/Ipsos poll saw his lead over Trump among Hispanics fall to 9 points in August from 30 points in July. “So many Latinos in my community are essential workers who are on the front lines of the fight against coronavirus, but Trump’s failed response has treated our essential workers like they’re disposable, and it’s a disgrace,” state Sen. Rebecca Rios said in a call with reporters. Alfredo Gutierrez, a former Democratic state Senate majority leader, called the Latinos who met with Trump “self-loathing” for sitting next to the president. “Why would they deign to sit, agree to sit, next to this guy who has spent the last three years spewing hate against us?”
