⁍ The request includes a call for additional communications resources, damage-assessment teams, search-and-rescue and debris management.
– As firefighters continue to battle dozens of wildfires scorching the western US, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown has asked the White House for a presidential disaster declaration. In a letter to President Trump, Brown says Oregon’s requests for assistance from neighboring states “were, for days, going unfilled,” and the state needs help with communications, damage assessment, search-and-rescue, debris management, shelter, and medical assistance, Reuters reports. California Gov. Jerry Brown has also asked for a presidential disaster declaration, the Los Angeles Times reports. More than 6,200 homes and other structures have been destroyed by dozens of wildfires that have burned across 4.5 million acres in California, Oregon, and Washington state since mid-August. At least 25 people have been confirmed dead in California wildfires since mid-August, and one death has been confirmed in Washington state. Oregon’s requests for assistance “became completely exhausted during this event, and because both California and Washington state are experiencing similar wildfire emergencies, Oregon’s requests for assistance from neighboring states were, for days, going unfilled,” the letter said, explaining the need for further federal resources.
