– Pandemic Pandemic No. 19 may be over, but that doesn’t mean it’s over for the world’s health care workers. A new report from the World Health Organization finds that the number of people infected with the virus has almost doubled in the past two years to 1.6 million, reports the BBC. That’s thanks in large part to the fact that the virus is more easily transmitted through the air than other diseases, making it more of a public health threat than the H1N1 strain of flu that killed tens of thousands of people last year. The WHO’s chief medical officer says the new virus is similar to the H1N1 strain in that it is highly contagious and can be passed from person to person through the air. The report also finds that the number of infections in the developing world has almost doubled in the past two years to 2.4 million, reports the New York Times. That’s thanks in large part to China, where the H1N1 strain is believed to have originated, as well as India, where the virus is believed to have originated. More:
