⁍ Poland and the EU have increasingly clashed over LGBT+ rights.

⁍ The ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) has denounced as a foreign ‘ideology’ that threatens traditional values.

⁍ Poland and Hungary are already being investigated by the European Commission for potentially breaching EU rules.

– The European Parliament voted by a large majority Thursday to condemn the Law and Justice Party’s (PiS) anti-LGBT policies in Poland and to demand the EU take action, Reuters reports. The PiS, which took power in Poland last year, has passed laws that decriminalize same-sex marriage, make it harder to get medical treatment for HIV/AIDS, and ban same-sex couples from adopting each other. “We are not an ideology. We are human beings,” Terry Reintke, an MEP who co-chairs the European Parliament’s LGBTI Rights Intergroup, said this week during a debate on the resolution. “If a member state is in breach of rule of law and fundamental rights, like Poland now, the government should not be able to distribute EU funding any more.” The EU has already cut off funding to six “LGBT-free zones” in Poland.
