⁍ The United States on Thursday imposed sanctions on a Hezbollah official and two Lebanon-based companies.

⁍ The Treasury said the companies were leveraged by Hezbollah to conceal money transfers to the group’s own accounts.

⁍ The action freezes any U.S. assets of those blacklisted and generally bars Americans from dealing with them.

– The US Treasury Department on Thursday blacklisted two Lebanon-based companies and a senior Hezbollah official for their alleged role in enriching the Iranian-backed group, Reuters reports. According to Reuters, the blacklisted companies are Arch Consulting and Meamar Construction, which the US says were used by Hezbollah to hide money transfers to the group’s accounts. The blacklisted official is a senior Hezbollah Executive Council official named Sultan Khalifah As’ad. “Through Hizballah’s exploitation of the Lebanese economy and manipulation of corrupt Lebanese officials, companies associated with the terrorist organization are awarded government contracts,” Reuters quotes Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin as saying in a statement. “The United States remains committed to targeting Hizballah and its supporters as they corruptly abuse Lebanese resources to enrich their leaders while the Lebanese people suffer from inadequate services.”
