– Dozens of workers in Brazil were found in slave-like conditions last week while awaiting work at a fertilizer plant owned by the world’s largest producer of potash and phosphate, Reuters reports. The workers, hired by contractor Manserv, had not been paid, their working papers had been withheld, and they were forced to sleep in an open shed and on a balcony with inadequate bedding, according to labor inspectors. “This is all illegal,” says the leader of the investigation. “They were tricked, they migrated, and then were kept in conditions analogous to slavery. We understand that to be a discriminatory practice.” Manserv was charged with keeping workers in degrading conditions, but Mosaic, the company that hired them, was not cited.
