⁍ Barbara Lagoa, a Cuban American, and Amy Coney Barrett, a conservative Catholic, are among the top contenders.

⁍ Both women were nominated to their current positions by Trump.

⁍ A Barrett nomination would likely be more controversial.

– Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death has created an opening on the Supreme Court, and Reuters reports that President Trump is said to be considering two female federal appeals court judges. Cuban-American Barbara Lagoa and conservative Catholic Amy Coney Barrett are on the short list. Lagoa, 52, spent less than a year on Florida’s Supreme Court before being nominated by Trump to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in September. Barrett, 48, was confirmed by the Senate in a narrower vote than Lagoa, 55-43, in October of 2017. A Barrett nomination would likely be more controversial. Her strong conservative religious views have prompted abortion-rights groups to say that if confirmed by the Republican-led US Senate, she would likely vote to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion nationwide.
