– The death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg has set the stage for a fierce partisan battle in the Senate over who gets to fill her seat on the Supreme Court. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Friday night that President Trump’s nominee to replace Justice Ginsburg, who died Friday at the age of 86, will get a vote in the Senate, Reuters reports. Democrats, who want the Senate to wait until after the Nov. 3 election to consider Ginsburg’s replacement, urged McConnell to wait. “The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement. “Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president.” Republican Sen. Rick Scott said it would be “irresponsible” to allow a Supreme Court vacancy to last more than a year, the Hill reports. The last Supreme Court vacancy was filled by Justice Brett Kavanaugh in October 2018. If Trump were to nominate a conservative judge to replace Ginsburg, the court’s conservatives would have more heft with a 6-3 majority. The current court has five justices with conservative bents and four liberals. If Trump were to choose a conservative judge to replace the liberal Ginsburg, as expected, the court’s conservatives would have more heft with a 6-3 majority.
