⁍ The bill would need congressional approval and is not likely to see action until next year at the earliest.

⁍ It was not immediately clear whether the Justice Department will support any single piece of legislation already out there.

⁍ In June, the Justice Department proposed that Congress will take up legislation to curb this immunity.

– The Justice Department is proposing major reforms to the legal immunity enjoyed by internet companies like Google and Facebook, Reuters reports. Under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, internet companies can’t be held liable for content posted by their users. The proposed changes would allow companies to be held responsible for content posted by users if they “willfully distribute illegal material or moderate content in bad faith.” Attorney General William Barr says the department is urging Congress to reform Section 230 “and begin to hold online platforms accountable both when they unlawfully censor speech and when they knowingly facilitate egregious criminal activity online.” The proposal was unveiled ahead of a meeting Wednesday between President Trump and attorneys general from 10 states, including Republican Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, who have been clashing with the president over his attacks on Twitter and other social media companies, the New York Times reports. In May, Trump ordered the Commerce Department to file a petition asking the Federal Communication Commission to limit protections under Section 230 after Twitter warned readers in May to fact-check his posts about unsubstantiated claims of fraud in mail-in voting. Twitter has placed warning labels on Trump tweets, saying they have included potentially misleading information about mail-in voting. Trump will meet with attorneys general from Texas, Arizona, Utah, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Missouri—all Republicans—during a meeting Wednesday.
