– President Trump has settled on his pick to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court left by the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Reuters reports. Amy Barrett, a federal appeals court judge in Washington, DC, will be confirmed by the Senate as Trump’s third Supreme Court pick. She is a “brilliant and gifted” woman, Trump said in a statement released by the White House on Saturday. Barrett, 54, has served on the federal appeals court for the District of Columbia since 2003 and previously served as a judge on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. She is the daughter of a judge on the Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit and the niece of a judge on the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. The Washington Post reports that Trump chose Barrett over federal appeals court judges Neil Gorsuch and William Pryor, both of whom were strongly criticized by Democrats during the process for being Trump’s first two Supreme Court nominees. Senate Democrats have vowed to oppose Barrett’s nomination, saying she would cement a conservative majority on the court.
