⁍ President Donald Trump said the U.S. Senate will likely open hearings on his third Supreme Court nominee, Amy Barrett, on Oct. 12.
⁍ If confirmed, Barrett will replace liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died on Sept. 18.
⁍ The hearings are part of an accelerated timeline as the Republican-controlled Senate seeks to vote on Trump’s nominee before the election.
– President Trump has unveiled his choice to replace the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court. Trump announced the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett, a federal appeals court judge in Washington, DC, on Saturday, the AP reports. She is Trump’s third Supreme Court nominee; the first two were Neil Gorsuch and Merrick Garland, who was appointed by George W. Bush. If Barrett is confirmed by the Senate, she would be the first justice from the conservative wing of the court since Antonin Scalia more than 30 years ago. Reuters reports that Barrett is a 48-year-old devout Roman Catholic who serves on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals. She was previously nominated by George W. Bush for a seat on the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
