⁍ One of Britain’s most recognisable symbols, red pillar boxes appear on countless postcards and souvenir items.

⁍ The Royal Mail said it had selected one postbox in each of the four constituent parts of the United Kingdom.

⁍ They will remain that way for the whole of October, which is Black History Month.

– October is Black History Month in Britain, and to mark the occasion, the Royal Mail has painted four of the country’s red postboxes black and gold, Reuters reports. The four boxes—one in each of Britain’s four constituent parts, England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland—are located close to the Black Cultural Archives heritage center in Brixton in south London, one in Glasgow, one in Cardiff, and one in Belfast. They will remain that way for the whole of Black History Month. The black postbox in Brixton features a painting by British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare, whose work has been featured on a limited edition stamp from the Royal Mail. The other three boxes are located in Cardiff, where an image of Jamaican-born nurse Mary Seacole cared for wounded soldiers during the Crimean War, and Belfast, where a picture of Lenny Henry is “instrumental in helping a multi-cultural society to embrace multi-cultural comedy.”
