– The Czech Republic has declared a state of emergency and banned all concerts, operas, and musicals in an attempt to contain the spread of the deadly Middle Eastern virus known as coronavirus, which has killed at least 11 people in the country and sickened more than 40,000, the AP reports. The state of emergency, which went into effect yesterday, bans public gatherings in all of the country’s 31 provinces and requires all citizens with symptoms of the virus to be quarantined, the BBC reports. The move comes after the country’s first death from coronavirus last week. Some 38% of eligible voters turned out to vote yesterday in regional elections that were seen as an indicator of support for Prime Minister Andrej Babis’ party’s handling of the outbreak, Reuters reports. “I would like to thank all my fellow citizens. It is amazing that they were not afraid and they voted,” Babis said. The elections were seen as an indicator of support for his party’s handling of the second wave of the outbreak.
