– The conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh has claimed more than 360 lives over the past 11 days, making it the deadliest fighting in the region in more than 25 years, reports Reuters. The separatist region of Azerbaijan is run by ethnic Armenians, but since a war ended with Armenia’s capture of Nagorno-Karabakh in 1994, the area has remained under Azerbaijan’s control. On Wednesday, Azerbaijan’s president said his country would only hold talks with Armenia after the fighting ends. Armenia’s prime minister, meanwhile, reiterated his country’s demand for a ceasefire, saying Turkey is “discontinuing its engagement” and “the withdrawal of mercenaries and terrorists or their elimination.” Russia and Iran have also expressed concern about the conflict, with Iran’s president warning “the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan does not become a regional war,” reports the AP. Russia’s foreign intelligence chief has said the conflict is attracting what he called mercenaries and terrorists, and that Nagorno-Karabakh could become a launch pad for Islamist militants to enter Russia and other states. Azerbaijan says Azeri cities outside the conflict zone have also been attacked, taking fighting closer to territory from which pipelines carry Azeri gas and oil to Europe. BP said it had reinforced security at its facilities in Azerbaijan. The British oil company said it was working closely “with the relevant authorities in an effort to take necessary measures to provide the protection of our personnel, operations and assets.”
