⁍ Belarus has been rocked by street protests and strikes since authorities announced Alexander Lukashenko had won an Aug. 9 vote by a landslide.

⁍ Security forces have detained more than 13,000 people during a post-election crackdown.

– Tens of thousands of protesters again took to the streets of Belarus’ capital of Minsk today, demanding a new election in the former Soviet republic that has been ruled by Alexander Lukashenko since 1994, Reuters reports. Police in black balaclavas hauled protesters into unmarked black vans, beat them with batons, and fired water from a cannon into crowds. At least 50 protesters were detained, according to Russia’s Interfax news agency. The US, the European Union, Britain, and Canada have imposed sanctions on Lukashenko and other officials in the wake of the election.
