– Heritier Lumumba says he endured a “culture of racist jokes” while playing for the Australian Football League’s Collingwood Club—and now he’s suing the club and the league, Reuters reports. Lumumba, a Brazilian-born player who played 199 games for the club from 2005 to 2014, said on social media earlier this year that he had “suffered loss, damage, and injury including trauma, humiliation, distress, and loss of enjoyment” at the hands of his teammates, some of whom dubbed him “Chimp,” during his playing days. In documents filed to the Supreme Court of Victoria state, Lumumba says he suffered “trauma, humiliation, distress, and loss of enjoyment” and that the league failed to take “reasonable steps” to prevent the abuse, the Australia Broadcasting Corp reports. Collingwood in June said it would investigate Lumumba’s allegations and the AFL launched an independent review of the club’s culture during his playing career. Six former players have come forward to verify Lumumba’s allegation he was called “Chimp.” Coach Nathan Buckley, a former team mate of Lumumba who has been on the Collingwood staff since 2010, said in June he had never heard the nickname used but the club would conduct their investigation with “integrity.”
