⁍ Jacinda Ardern made a name for herself by crushing COVID-19 in the country.

⁍ Now she faces a challenge to show her leadership extends beyond crisis management and kindness.

⁍ Her Labour Party won a landslide victory in the general election.

⁍ The win is also the reward for Ardern’s leadership through a series of extraordinary events.

– Jacinda Ardern has been re-elected as New Zealand’s prime minister—just eight months after giving birth to her first child. The 37-year-old, who became the world’s youngest female leader at the age of 37 in 2017, is now just the second leader to give birth while in office, after Pakistan’s Benazir Bhutto, Reuters reports. She gave birth to Neve Te Aroha in June, just eight months after becoming prime minister. Ardern’s Labour Party won a majority of the vote in Saturday’s election, meaning she will be able to form a single-party government without the help of the Green Party, which boycotted last year’s election, the AP reports. Ardern, who became prime minister after her party won the most seats in the last election, has been hailed around the world for her response to last year’s mass shootings in New Zealand, including when she wore a hijab to meet Muslims after the attacks. “Be strong, be kind,” she said. “Humanity, kindness, an innate sense of our connection to each other. And a belief that we are guardians, not just of our home and our planet, but of each other.”
