⁍ Malian troops have regained control of a village in the centre of the country where more than 2,000 residents have been besieged by Islamist militants for two weeks.

⁍ The air force dropped special forces troops into the village on Thursday.

⁍ The operation broke a siege of the village of Farabougou that began when militants kidnapped several residents.

– The Malian military says it has retaken the village of Farabougou from al-Qaeda-linked militants, ending a two-week siege that had left more than 2,000 people trapped inside, Reuters reports. The military says it used an air force to drop troops into the village on Thursday. “The access roads to Farabougou are still blocked, the jihadists are still around, in the forests or hidden on either side of the roads,” says the mayor of a nearby town. Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb seized the village two weeks ago, kidnapping many of its Bambara ethnic group for ransom.
