⁍ The Aquatics Centre was due to officially open on March 22.

⁍ That event was cancelled over coronavirus fears.

⁍ Two days later the entire Tokyo Games was postponed until 2021.

– “I really hope that the wonderful swimmers can unleash their powers,” Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said Saturday at the opening of a venue for next year’s Olympics. The Aquatics Center was supposed to open in March but was postponed over fears of the Zika virus, and the entire Tokyo Games has now been postponed until 2021, Reuters reports. The $523 million center, which will be used by top swimmers and divers, was inaugurated seven months after it was supposed to open. “There have been some unexpected things such as the postponement, but we need to hold a successful Games,” Koike said. “I really hope that the wonderful swimmers can unleash their powers and the world’s top swimmers exhibit great performances at this center.”
