⁍ Indonesia’s workers will stage further mass protests if President Joko Widodo signs new jobs measures into law next week.

⁍ The government says the legislation will boost employment by cutting red tape.

⁍ Unions and rights groups say the measures favour business over workers and the environment.

– Indonesia’s president is expected to sign a measure into law this week that will cut red tape, ease restrictions on foreign investment, and improve the country’s labor market, Reuters reports. But that doesn’t mean the country’s workers are happy about it. “It is the exploitation of labor that we’re against,” says the head of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions. “We are ready for dialogue, even ready for a debate if necessary in an open, public hearing.” According to the AP, hundreds of thousands of workers have taken to the streets in Indonesia over the last few weeks to protest the measures, which they say favor business over workers and the environment. If President Joko Widodo signs the measure into law Wednesday, mass protests are expected across the country.
