⁍ One of two Republican U.S. senators who had opposed the pre-election confirmation of President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Amy Barrett.
⁍ Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska reiterated her opposition to the rushed confirmation process, which will culminate in a final vote on Monday.
⁍ Republicans hold the Senate with a 53-47 majority, meaning at least four Republican senators would have had to break ranks to block Barrett’s confirmation.
– Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court cleared a major hurdle in the Senate on Saturday, with all Democrats and three Republicans voting in favor of the nomination, reports the Hill. The final vote was along party lines, 53 to 47, with Republicans Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska dissenting. Murkowski said the rush to confirm Barrett, President Trump’s last Supreme Court nominee, before the election “will serve to reinforce the public perception about political influence on the court,” but she said she had “no doubt about her capability to do the job and to do it well.” Reuters notes that Murkowski is the second Republican senator to oppose Barrett’s nomination, but her support “help cement the near certainty that Barrett will take up a lifetime appointment on the bench over universal Democratic opposition.”
