– For the first time in history, a North American team has won the Dota 2 tournament. The Los Angeles Times reports Team Liquid defeated the Netherlands’ Team Nigma 3-1 on Sunday at the ESL One Germany event in Berlin. The victory means Team Liquid, which is made up of gamers from the US, Canada, and Europe, will move on to the grand final on Nov. 1 with a $150,000 prize money. The Times notes that this is the first time a North American team has won the $400,000 tournament, which is open to teams from Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The Washington Post reports that this year’s tournament featured 16 teams from Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States, with teams playing five best-of-three matches. Each team needed three victories to secure a spot in the eight-team playoffs, following a best-of-three, double-elimination format. Teams never played the same opponent twice.
