⁍ The Republican-controlled U.S. Senate plans to move closer toward a final confirmation vote on President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee.

⁍ No nominee to the Supreme Court has ever been confirmed by the Senate this close to a presidential election.

⁍ With Barrett on board, the Supreme Court would have a solid 6-3 conservative majority that could last for years.

– With less than a week to go until Election Day, the Senate is poised to confirm President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee. Amy Coney Barrett, a conservative judge on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, is expected to be confirmed by the Senate on Monday, Reuters reports. The 48-year-old was nominated to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Sept. 26. Democrats boycotted Thursday’s Senate Judiciary Committee vote on her nomination, saying Republicans rushed the process so close to the election that it had the potential to influence the court for years to come. Republicans have a 53-47 edge in the Senate, but Democrats have enough votes to block Barrett’s confirmation. Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, one of two Republican senators who had opposed the nomination, said Saturday she would vote to confirm Barrett. “I have no doubt about her capability to do the job and to do it well,” she said.
