– Four months ago, Australia’s second-largest city of Melbourne was locked down by health officials amid an outbreak of a deadly virus. On Monday, officials announced that they had gone 24 hours without detecting any new cases of coronavirus, which has killed 905 people in Australia and sickened more than 27,500, Reuters reports. “This is one of the best outcomes we could hope to see,” says Jeroen Weimar, commander of testing and community engagement for Victoria state. Officials say they have tested about 15,000 people in the area and all have come back negative. The outbreak of the virus, which causes vomiting and fever, has forced the closure of hundreds of businesses and schools and raised the unemployment rate to a 22-year high of 7.5%.
