– A wildfire burning in Orange County, Calif., has prompted evacuation orders for 60,000 people, the Los Angeles Times reports. The Silverado fire erupted early Monday and quickly spread across 2,000 acres in the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains. No injuries or property losses have been reported. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands in California’s central and northern regions lost power for a second day due to high winds, Reuters reports. The Pacific Gas and Electric Company cut power to more than 350,000 homes and businesses in 34 counties as a precaution. Wind-damaged electrical lines coming into contact with tinder-dry vegetation have been implicated in causing a number of devastating California wildfires in recent years, and utilities have increasingly resorted to such ‘public safety power shutoffs’ to reduce the risk. Winds were clocked at up to 89mph in Sonoma County wine country north of San Francisco Bay, and were steadily blowing at more than 50mph elsewhere through the region. By midday Monday, PG&E said it was beginning to restore power to some customers ‘where it is safe to do so,’ with most the shutoffs expected to be ended by Tuesday night as winds abated.
