⁍ Beijing imposed a national security law on its freest city on June 30, a move widely condemned by Western governments and human rights groups.
– Three people were detained in Hong Kong on Tuesday under the city’s controversial national security law, Reuters reports. The suspects are accused of publishing content to incite others to secede from China. Pro-independence group Studentlocalism says three of its members, including former leader Tony Chung, were among them. Chung was taken away from a coffee shop near the US consulate by unidentified men, local media reported, adding that he was believed to be preparing to make an asylum application. Chung had been free on bail after being arrested under the national security law in July on suspicion of being involved in an organization that vowed to fight for an independent Hong Kong. Twenty-eight people have been arrested under the new legislation, according to a police post on Facebook. Critics of the legislation say it represents the latest move by Beijing to tighten its grip over the former British colony and erode its judicial independence.
