⁍ Spain saw its biggest quarterly increase in the number of unemployed people since 2012.

⁍ But in a sign of how volatile the job market is, a record number of people also found a job in the third quarter.

⁍ All in all, the unemployment rate rose more than expected, climbing to 16.26% from 15.33% in the second quarter.

– Spain has declared a state of emergency in response to the H1N1 virus, which has killed at least 35,000 people in the country and sickened more than a million. The government says the outbreak of the virus, which has spread to other European countries, is so severe that it has no choice but to declare a state of emergency, the BBC reports. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy says the state of emergency will allow the government to take “all necessary measures to control the spread of the disease and to prevent its impact on other parts of the country and the rest of the world.” The move comes after the country’s Constitutional Court ruled that the current legal system isn’t suited to dealing with an outbreak of the virus, the Guardian reports. Spain has declared a state of emergency in three other regions as well. The H1N1 virus is believed to have originated in the United States.
