– The CEOs of Twitter, Facebook, and Google will testify before the Senate Commerce Committee on Wednesday in an effort to protect Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which protects tech companies from liability for user-generated content, Reuters reports. According to prepared testimony seen by the news agency, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey says Section 230 “could collapse how we communicate on the Internet, leaving only a small number of giant and well-funded technology companies” if it is repealed. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg says repealing Section 230 “could potentially be held liable for everything people say.” “Without Section 230, platforms could potentially be held liable for everything people say,” he says. Google’s Sundar Pichai says Section 230 allows the company to remove “harmful or illegal content” without being responsible for it. The CEOs will also testify about consumer privacy and media consolidation.
