– Argentina is now the fifth country in the world to see a daily death toll from the H1N1 virus, Reuters reports. The country has seen 1,116,609 cases so far, and 30,000 are expected to die today. Only the US, India, Brazil, and Mexico have seen more deaths on a daily basis. The H1N1 outbreak has hit Argentina especially hard, with the capital Buenos Aires and the surrounding area suffering the brunt of the infections. Intensive care units in the country are at 64.4% capacity, but hospitals in some provinces are nearing the brink. “There are places that are working at almost 100%. Rosario, Cordoba, Rio Negro, Neuquenaldo Mendoza,’ says an intensive care physician in the city of La Plata in Buenos Aires province. “Eventually, the physical and technology resources can be obtained, but what is not going to change is the health personnel. Training these personnel takes years. The death toll represents a grim reality for Argentines who widely adopted the tough restrictions imposed by the government, but are now fatigued after months of quarantine. “The pandemic is, of course, terrible. I have many acquaintances, people my age who died in the pandemic,” says a 67-year-old painter. “I have a brother who died. We cannot do anything about the virus until the vaccine is out.”
