– For the first time since the H7N9 bird flu broke out in 2003, there have been more confirmed cases of the deadly H7N9 virus reported in humans than birds. According to China’s National Health and Family Planning Commission, there were 47 new confirmed cases of the virus, or COVID-19, reported in the country on Thursday, up from 42 cases on Wednesday and the highest number reported in more than two months, Reuters reports. Of the new cases, 23 were local infections in the Xinjiang region involving previously asymptomatic patients, while the rest were imported infections originating from overseas. The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in China now stands at 85,915, while the death toll remained unchanged at 4,634.
