– Germany has declared an emergency in response to a spike in infections from the MERS-CoV virus, with Chancellor Angela Merkel today announcing a partial lockdown of the country for four weeks beginning Nov. 2, Reuters reports. Restaurants, bars, cinemas, pools, and gyms will be closed, as will concerts, and sports events will only be held without spectators. “We need to take action now,” said Merkel. “Our health system can still cope with this challenge today, but at this speed of infections it will reach the limits of its capacity within weeks.” Germany is now in the midst of a second wave of infections, with 464,239 cases and 10,183 deaths as of yesterday, the AP reports. “Our hope is that if we manage to do this for four weeks, that we then have a chance to halt this dramatic development, that we then have a chance to regain a bit of security,” says Berlin’s mayor.
