⁍ Both Trump and Biden have criticized large tech companies but stopped short of explicitly calling for them to be broken up.
⁍ Trump has said ‘there is something going on in terms of monopoly’ when asked about big tech firms.
⁍ Biden, who was vice president during the Silicon Valley-friendly administration of Barack Obama, and his running mate Kamala Harris have said they would seriously look at the idea of companies like Facebook.
– Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg were both grilled by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill on Wednesday about the regulation of Big Tech—a topic likely to come up in the final weeks of the election, Reuters reports. Google is under investigation by the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission for allegedly giving its rivals an unfair leg up in the online advertising market, according to the New York Times. The FTC has accused Google of abusing its market power by limiting the reach of the New York Post, which broke the story of Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, last year. Google and Facebook have also come under fire from President Trump, who once again called for the Section 230 law protecting online privacy to be repealed. Biden has also called for regulation of Big Tech and has said he would consider dismantling companies like Facebook.
