– The World Health Organization has declared the current outbreak of the MERS-CoV virus a public health emergency in Spain, where more than 100 people have been infected, the BBC reports. Spain’s health minister says the outbreak, which has now spread to Germany, France, and Britain, is caused by a mutated version of the virus that has previously infected people in Africa and the Middle East. The current outbreak of the virus, which has killed at least 18 people and sickened more than 100 in Europe, is the biggest in the world so far, Reuters reports. Spain has declared a state of emergency and urged people to avoid nonessential travel to the affected areas, where hundreds of people have been infected.
