⁍ Pakistan summoned the French ambassador in Islamabad as anger spread over President Emmanuel Macron’s reaction to a French teacher’s murder.
⁍ Prime Minister Imran Khan said ‘growing Islamophobia’ was encouraging extremism and violence worldwide.
⁍ Facebook said it was updating its hate speech policy to ban content that denied or distorted the Holocaust.
– “I would ask you to place a similar ban on Islamophobia and hate against Islam for Facebook that you have put in place for the Holocaust,” Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan wrote in an open letter to Facebook on Sunday. “One cannot send a message that while hate messages against some are unacceptable, these are acceptable against others.” A Facebook rep tells Reuters that the company opposes all forms of hate and will “remove this hate speech as soon as we become aware of it.” The rep says Facebook has “more work to do.” Khan’s letter comes after Facebook said it was updating its hate speech policy to ban content that denied or distorted the Holocaust. “I would ask you to place a similar ban on Islamophobia and hate against Islam for Facebook that you have put in place for the Holocaust,” Khan wrote. “Such a stance is reflective of prejudice and bias that will encourage further radicalization.” Pakistan’s foreign minister says the country has summoned the French ambassador over French President Emmanuel Macron’s “irresponsible remarks” on Islam, the BBC reports. Macron paid tribute last week to the beheading of a French teacher by an Islamist radical. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan also criticized Macron, saying last week the French president needed mental help over his attitude towards Muslims. Pakistan and Turkey share strong ties, while Khan and Erdogan have developed a close relationship—particularly on the topic of Islamophobia. Khan also referred to the situation in France, where he said Islam was being associated with terrorism.
