– Spain has declared a state of emergency as the number of cases of coronavirus, a respiratory illness related to the common cold, continues to climb, with more than a million cases across the country and the death toll now at more than 200, the BBC reports. “We are facing an extremely serious situation,” Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Sunday, warning that the country is in the midst of a “second pandemic” and facing an “extremely difficult” winter. More than 42.9 million people around the world have been infected with the virus, and 1,151,929 have died, according to a Reuters tally, with the US leading the way with the highest number of deaths. A vaccine being developed by Oxford and AstraZeneca produced immune responses in both elderly and young people, but British Health Secretary Matt Hancock cautioned that it won’t be widely available until next year and said “we’re not there yet,” the Guardian reports.
