– Two German districts have declared a lockdown in an effort to contain the spread of a new virus that has killed 10 people in the country. The districts of Rottal-Inn and Berchtesgaden are the second and third in Germany to impose lockdowns due to the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus, or MERS-CoV, Reuters reports. In Rottal-Inn, a district home to some 120,000 people, anyone who needs to go out will have to stay home for two weeks unless it’s absolutely necessary. In Berchtesgaden, a district south of the Bavarian Alps, the lockdown will last two weeks. German Chancellor Angela Merkel says the situation in the country is “very, very serious” and a conference of leaders from the country’s 16 states will be held this week to decide on measures to contain the spread, Reuters reports. The death toll rose by 24 to 10,056 over the past week, and the infection rate stood at 74.9 per 100,000 people.
