⁍ Thousands of Thai protesters demanding reforms of the monarchy marched to the German embassy in Bangkok on Monday.
⁍ Germany has said it would be unacceptable for King Maha Vajiralongkorn, 68, to conduct politics there.
⁍ Student-led protests that began by calling for the removal of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, 66, a former military ruler, have become the biggest challenge in decades to a monarchy that the Thai constitution says must be revered.
– “Long live the king. We will protect him with our lives.” That was just one of the chants heard Monday as thousands of protesters marched to the German embassy in Bangkok to call for reforms to Thailand’s monarchy, the AP reports. The protesters want King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who spends much of his time in Germany, to be bound by the country’s constitution and reverse changes that give him personal control of the palace fortune and some army units. They also want him to pay an inheritance tax there after the 2016 death of his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej. “The era of change has arrived. The flowing stream of democracy cannot be stopped,” said a statement read by protesters at the German embassy, per Reuters. “Down with feudalism, Long live the people.” Germany has said it would be unacceptable for Vajiralongkorn to conduct politics in the country, and the country is continuing to look into his behavior while in Bavaria.
