– The deadly virus known as coronavirus has now killed more than a million people around the world and health officials are scrambling to contain its spread. The latest death toll from the illness, which causes vomiting and fever and is often fatal, was announced Monday in Russia, where President Vladimir Putin has declared a state of emergency and ordered the military to help contain the outbreak, the AP reports. More than 43,000 people worldwide have been infected with the illness this year, with the vast majority of cases in Russia, India, and Brazil. More than 50,000 cases were reported in France on Sunday, making it the first country to hit the 50,000 mark, reports Reuters. In the US, the number of cases last week rose 24%, while the number of tests performed rose 5.5%, according to a Reuters analysis. A vaccine being developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca produced immune responses in both elderly and young people, but British Health Secretary Matt Hancock cautioned that the vaccine would not be widely available until next year and said, “We’re not there yet,” reports Reuters.
