– Protesters took to the streets of Philadelphia last night after police shot and killed a 27-year-old black man who they say was armed with a knife, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. According to NBC Philadelphia, four police officers were injured, one critically, when protesters threw bricks at them outside a police station. The officers were treated at the scene before being taken to the hospital. The shooting of Walter Wallace sparked protests outside the police department, with some demonstrators throwing bricks and breaking windows, the Inquirer reports. Police say Wallace was shot after he refused to drop the knife. Video of the shooting appears to show officers pointing their guns at Wallace as he walked down the street. He approached them as they backed away, with guns still aimed at him, while yelling to him to put down his knife. Both officers fired several shots, and Wallace collapsed on the street, according to the video. The shooting is being investigated by the Philadelphia Police Department’s Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Unit, and Mayor Jim Kenney says the department will “conduct a full investigation.” The American Civil Liberties Union is calling for a full investigation. “It is time to divest in police and invest in community programs, including the kind of mental health services that allow intervention that may have prevented Mr. Wallace’s killing,” the executive director of the Pennsylvania ACLU tells Reuters.
