– A US consulate employee in Turkey has been sentenced to more than five years in prison for his alleged role in a 2016 coup attempt. A court in Istanbul found Nazmi Mete Canturk, a security officer at the US consulate in the city, guilty of aiding a terrorist organization and sentenced him to more than five years and two months, reports Reuters. Canturk, who will be free pending an appeal, denied involvement in the coup attempt and said his job required him to meet with local officials. Canturk is the third US consulate worker to be convicted in Turkey. A translator for the US Drug Enforcement Administration at the consulate in Istanbul was sentenced to nearly nine years in prison in June for aiding followers of Fethullah Gulen, a US-based cleric blamed by Turkey for the coup.
