⁍ The decision is a boost for Bayer, which has been hammered by lawsuits over various chemicals in the United States.
⁍ Environmental groups have sought a ban on dicamba products, arguing they harm nearby plants and wildlife.
⁍ The EPA’s decision invalidates the court’s ruling, experts said.
– The Trump administration is giving the go-ahead to farmers to use a controversial herbicide on their crops for the next five years. The EPA on Tuesday approved the use of XtendiMax, a dicamba-based herbicide made by Bayer, for use on soybeans and cotton, reports Reuters. In June, a federal appeals court blocked the sale of XtendiMax and two other dicamba-based herbicides for five years after ruling the EPA failed to consider the risks of dicamba drift when approving them. Environmental groups had argued the chemicals harm wildlife and nearby plants. The Trump administration, however, said the EPA “substantially understated the risks related to the use of dicamba.” The agency also approved the use of another dicamba-based herbicide, Engenia, by BASF and another by Syngenta.
