– At least one person was killed and two injured when Myanmar’s army fired on a boat carrying humanitarian aid in the western state of Rakhine, the International Committee of the Red Cross says. The Red Cross says the boat was transporting “humanitarian assistance in support of the civilian population affected by the armed conflict,” but neither the army nor the Arakan Army, which is fighting the government for greater autonomy in the region, gave figures for casualties, Reuters reports. The Arakan Army denies its troops were on board the boat and accuses the army of a “war crime against civilians.” It says the boat was attacked by three navy boats and soldiers fired back, causing it to burst into flames. The Red Cross has suspended activities in the town of Rathedaung where the incident took place and trips out of the state capital Sittwe. Rakhine state has been roiled for more than a year by conflict between government troops and insurgents from the Arakan Army fighting for greater autonomy for the region. Hundreds of thousands of Muslim Rohingya have been displaced during the conflict and dozens killed in shelling and crossfire. A driver for the World Health Organization was killed in April while transporting swabs from patients to be tested for coronavirus. Polls across much of Rakhine have been canceled by Myanmar’s electoral body on account of the violence.
