⁍ The curfew will run through Thursday at 6 a.m., Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and other officials told a briefing.

⁍ Tension has gripped the streets of Philadelphia since Monday’s deadly police shooting of Walter Wallace, 27.

– A city-wide curfew was imposed in Philadelphia Wednesday night after a second night of looting and violence following the police shooting of a black man. The 9pm to 6am curfew will be in effect through Thursday morning, Reuters reports. More than 170 people have been arrested and 53 police officers have been injured in the protests that began after the shooting of 27-year-old Walter Wallace on Monday. Police say Wallace was shot after he allegedly lunged at officers with a knife. His father, Walter Wallace Sr., says his son had a history of mental illness. “I don’t condone no violence, tearing up the city, looting of the stores, and all this chaos,” he told reporters Tuesday. “It’s an SOS to help, not to hurt.” The Philadelphia Police Department says it will release bodycam footage and 911 call records related to the shooting after Wallace’s family has a chance to review them, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw says there has been “widespread lawlessness” in the city. “These individuals are doing nothing but simply wasting our precious resources,” she says. In Nevada on Wednesday, President Trump called the protests in Philadelphia “terrible” and offered to send federal help. “What I’m witnessing is terrible and frankly that the mayor or whoever it is that’s allowing people to riot, and loot and not stopping them is also just a horrible thing,” he said.
