⁍ Only a handful of this year’s U.S. gubernatorial races are expected to be competitive.

⁍ The outcome in most states will likely reflect how voters see the current leadership handling the pandemic.

– The presidential race isn’t the only one on the ballot. Governors are also on the ballot in 11 states and two territories, and only a handful are expected to be competitive, Reuters reports. Here are five races to watch: Montana: Republican Rep. Greg Gianforte is trying to unseat Democratic Lt. Gov. Mike Cooney, who is running to replace popular Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock, who is leaving to run for the Senate. Gianforte has pumped $7.5 million of his own money into the race, but he’s still tied with Cooney at 45% of likely voters. North Carolina: Democratic incumbent Roy Cooper is facing a challenge from Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Forest. Cooper has taken a hard stance on coronavirus restrictions, shutting down much of North Carolina business. He’s also leading in most polls, though the margin has fluctuated. Vermont: Republican Gov. Phil Scott is facing a challenge from Democratic Lt. Gov. David Zuckerman. Scott has criticized Trump, and said this summer he would not vote for him in the general election. A University of New Hampshire poll from Oct. 9 to 12 put Sununu 25 points ahead of his opponent. Missouri: Republican incumbent Mike Parson is running against Democrat Nicole Galloway. Galloway has focused her campaign on what the Democrats have characterized as the governor’s weak response to the pandemic. But that may not be enough to flip deep-red Missouri, which Trump won by more than 18 points.
