– Brazil’s government ran a budget deficit of 13.2 billion reais ($5.3 billion) in September, the country’s Treasury said on Thursday, a far cry from the 79.7 billion reais deficit economists in a Reuters poll had expected. September’s deficit was due to lower-than-expected tax revenues and heavy emergency spending in the wake of the country’s recession. The government ran a primary budget deficit of 76.2 billion reais in the first nine months of the year, compared with a 72.5 billion reais deficit a year ago.
