– “If this is not a gut punch, then you’re truly not conscious as a human being.” That was the message Tuesday from California Gov. Gavin Newsom during a tour of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, which was burned to the ground by wildfires earlier this month. The state’s oldest state park lost its visitor center, lodge, and nature museum, as well as many redwood, fir, and oak trees, Reuters reports. Parks district Superintendent Chris Spohrer says it will take a year or more to find and remove all of the trees that pose a danger of falling, and it could take another year to do so. “It’s going to take us a long time,” Spohrer tells the San Jose Mercury News. “It’s going to take us a long time to find and remove all of the trees that are in danger of falling.” Big Basin Redwoods was established in 1902.
