– Australia is officially in a recession—for the first time in three decades—but that doesn’t mean the country’s deadly MERS-CoV outbreak is over. Six people died in the state of Victoria over the weekend, bringing the national death toll to 663, reports Reuters. The state has seen 90 new cases in the past three days, but that’s down from a peak of more than 700 cases per day last month. Authorities are expected to ease restrictions on people entering and leaving Melbourne over the weekend. The outbreak has hit hard in the country’s second-largest city, shutting down large swathes of the economy. Australia has detected nearly 26,000 infections since the pandemic began, with Victoria accounting for about 75% of those cases. The national death tally rose to 663 after Victoria reported six deaths in the last 24 hours. Queensland state recorded two new COVID-19 cases, both linked to existing cases.
