⁍ Tropical Storm Sally strengthened off Florida on Sunday and was poised to become a category 2 hurricane.

⁍ The storm track was disrupting oil production in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico for a second time in less than a month.

⁍ Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said he had spoken earlier in the day to U.S. President Donald Trump and would submit to him a request for a pre-landfall declaration.

– Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards says he plans to ask President Trump for a pre-landfall declaration ahead of Tropical Storm Sally, which is expected to strengthen into a hurricane when it reaches the Gulf Coast on Tuesday. “We have every reason to believe that this storm represents a very significant threat to the people of southeast Louisiana,” Edwards said at a news conference Sunday, per Reuters. The National Hurricane Center says Sally, which strengthened off the west coast of Florida on Sunday, is expected to be a Category 2 hurricane when it reaches the Gulf Coast late Monday and early Tuesday, the AP reports. The NHC says the storm is likely to reach hurricane strength when it reaches the north-central Gulf Coast late Monday and early Tuesday. Louisiana is expected to be hit with high winds, storm surges, and heavy rainfall. Oil production in the Gulf of Mexico was already being disrupted by Sally, which follows Hurricane Laura, which slammed the Gulf Coast three weeks ago and was a Category 4 hurricane when it made landfall in Texas. Louisiana halted up to 1.5 million barrels per day of output and a half dozen refineries are still in the process of making repairs. Grand Isle, Louisiana went from voluntary to mandatory evacuation on Sunday. Further off in the Atlantic Ocean, Hurricane Paulette was moving closer to Bermuda, and was expected to strengthen during Sunday.
